Looking for Stocks to Buy? November May Offer Some Surprises

When you think about investing in November, what comes to mind? Maybe holiday shopping, big retailers or technology companies preparing for the Christmas rush.
But history suggests some of the better opportunities this month may be in industries that don't get nearly as much attention.
According to a recent report from Kiplinger, two sectors have consistently performed well during November over the past 20 years. And neither is directly tied to holiday shopping.
Industrials and materials are the two sectors worth watching.
Over the past two decades, industrial stocks have averaged a 3.48% gain during November, while materials stocks have averaged 2.94%.
That doesn't mean they'll repeat those gains this year, but it does show where investors have historically found opportunities.
So What Are These Industries?
Industrial companies make the equipment, machinery and systems that keep businesses running. Think heating and cooling systems, manufacturing equipment and companies that move products around the country.
Materials companies produce things businesses need to make other products. That includes packaging, metals, chemicals and even gold.
These aren't always the companies making headlines, but they play a major role in our economy
Four Companies Getting Attention
The Kiplinger report highlights four companies that investment analysts believe could have room to grow.
- SPX Technologies (SPXC) makes heating, cooling and infrastructure equipment. Its stock has struggled this year, falling nearly 20% at the time of the report. But 13 analysts still rated it a buy, suggesting they see potential for a recovery.
- GXO Logistics (GXO) helps major businesses manage warehouses and move products. With online shopping continuing to create demand for efficient delivery systems, the company has attracted attention from investors. All 17 analysts surveyed rated it a buy.
- Smurfit Westrock (SW) produces paper and packaging materials. Every time a business ships a product in a cardboard box, companies like this play a part. The company also offers a dividend, with a reported yield of about 4.4% at the time of the article. That means investors may receive regular income in addition to any increase in the stock's value.
- Newmont (NEM) is the world's largest gold mining company. Gold often attracts investors looking for protection during uncertain economic times. The company received 19 buy ratings, although analysts were not unanimous about its outlook.
Does This Mean You Should Buy These Stocks?
Not necessarily.
One important thing to understand about investing is that a company can be doing well and still have a stock price that falls. And just because an industry has performed well during November in previous years doesn't mean it will happen again.
There are plenty of things that can affect stock prices, including interest rates, inflation, company earnings and changes in the economy.
For someone investing for retirement or building savings over time, a diversified portfolio is generally a better foundation than trying to pick the next winning stock.
Still, paying attention to different industries can help you better understand where the economy may be headed.
The Bottom Line
November may be known for holiday shopping, but the stock market doesn't always follow the same calendar as consumers. Sometimes the companies worth watching are the ones making heating systems, managing warehouses, producing cardboard boxes or mining gold. You don't have to become a stock market expert to understand investing. Learning what different companies do, how they make money and why investors are interested in them is a good place to start.
And when it comes to your own money, thinking about the years ahead is usually more important than trying to predict what happens this month.
